Well this isn’t a review as I haven’t had time to check out all the books available on this site.

Loads of old American recipe books from 1798 onwards available for free download in pdf format.

Excellent resource for those interested in American food history.

Note: not all links to pdf files seem to be working and some of the page scans aren’t so great.

foodforfree.jpg    Richard Mabey 3 out of 5

A British classic, this book is responsible for re-introducing many UK citizens to the delights of our native, wild foods.  First published in 1972 processed and fast food was on the ascendancy and the trends of collecting your own food, traceability and organic foods of recent times were a long way off. Don’t be confused by the title, this is not a tongue-in-cheek, flares-wearing fun-poke at the crap food Britons used to eat in the seventies (and still do in Eastbourne) it’s a loving look at classics we used to love but have since forgotten in our rush to follow all the latest food trends. Mark Miller 4 out of 5

I was first introduced to this fantastic book while working in a “Californian” restaurant, near the Eiffel tower in Paris…it was a real revelation and I learnt a hell of a lot about the sort of food I was supposed to be cooking!

Mark Miller was a top chef based in California but his love of Mexican / South-Western food led him to re-locate to New Mexico to develop his style and open “Coyote Cafe”

Shizuo Tsuji 4 out of 5

The fact that this book is said to be the first authentic and comprehensive guide to Japanese food written in English has made it an essential for all cooks and chefs interested in Japanese recipes and cooking methods…”Japanese Cooking” is one of the very few books recommended in Jeffrey Steingarten’s “The man who ate everything“… (more…)
